Disney and Cold War Relic

As both American and Chinese media shied away, grassroots Chinese Americans donated to the efforts of getting their voice published. They are reminding the world that the protesting is still on by the busy-parents-and-never-before-activists.

Except these two above large donations, 957 donors donated total $46,972. The average donation size is about $49.

They are going to have ads campaigns in certain regional and Chinese media.

This doesn't stop diehard McCarthyists and people brain-washed by Cold-War propaganda from claiming themselves victims. After being totally mum like other major media outlets on thousands of Chinese American protesting of Disney/ABC's racial hatred charged violence speech in almost 30 cities, Boston Metro, felt the obligation to speak out and picked this totally ignorant "Letter from Reader" for publishing in highlight.

Had there been support or voice of Chinese government (They should have protested in the first place but never bothered. Imagine what if it were Japan or South Korea government.), Disney would have already apologized rather than keeping on the game of lies and deception campaign for "apologies". In fact Disney didn't hide the fact that they can count on their strongest ally in this Chinese government to quell any outrage in China. "Fortunately for Disney, the company has a valuable ally in China. State-owned Shanghai Shendi Group is Disney’s partner in the $4.4 billion Shanghai project. That should help Disney control the damage to its image among Chinese consumers."

It will take some time for American and allies' military power to "kill everyone in China" even though they were forever present in the Sea and Airspace around to contain the rise of China. For the Chinese Americans and Chinese Canadians, they already feel the chill of the hate speech and were obliged to speak out against the hate speech. How many more people will need to hurt of die before these readers realize that this is not a joke from whatever seen and heard after that show? If it is unclear from the skit, it has been quite clear from the "apologies".

Since this reader didn't know anything the Chinese Government or Chinese American in Boston said. It is beyond us to tell him about the absurdity of his other assertions. The spirit of Joseph McCarthy lives on forever in America.

For Disney, what they care most, is their money and influences. They phoned around frenetically trying to find in vain "sponsorship" of Chinese government, which unfortunately didn't act, to the disappointment of either for the protesters in need or the vigilant witch hunters. Given the fact that Disney weathered millions of protesters and boycotts, Jimmy Kimmel and their PR machine in Disney have every rights to keep on playing the game of smearing and fainting victims. Or as Boston Metro and such did, keep on mudding the water with ignorance and further Cold-War zombie teaching.

We are also pitiful for medias like Boston Metro and Boston Globe. Instead of helping to inform Americans, they chose to side with the deception side to avoid being lambasted by the "selected readers" for taking thousands of Chinese Americans' hard-earned money, before allowing their voices also present in the national racial hatred debate.

Vincent Chin, Jimmy Kimmel and Me

"The deafening silent, will it explode one day or be buried forever?"

After the out pour of Rally 119, the Chinese American community disappeared in quietness. So quiet it is hard to believe that there was some thing so extraordinary just two weeks ago. It is probably a time of reflection rather than giving up.

Law scholar Frank Wu was prescient when he opined 15 months before the infamous Jimmy Kimmel show. In "Why Vincent Chin Matters", he reminded us, with the hysteria and never ending China-bashing and hatred-mongering, something bounds to happen. It is not going to be precisely aimed at Chinese in the east hemisphere. Rather it will be haunting Asian Americans, who have their own differences and often flames among them, from the bloody history of past two centuries. It doesn't matter whether Japan or China was framed up as the enemy to divert people's anger from badly managed domestic economy. It is also already happening across American, sometimes whispering in the ears, sometimes brazenly declared, "kill all you Chinese", more than 30 years after the death of Vincent Chin.

Just like the murders of Vincent Chin didn't recognize that Asian-Americans actually made up much of the engineering force at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, the hate crime offenders of today won't understand that the mutual-benefiting trading and financing by China actually helped U.S. to fend off the worst recession since the great depression. Rather than demanding the truth, solutions and be more competitive, hatred were fanned and flaring. "It's because of you little mxxxxxfxxxxxs that we're out of work!"

This time most of Asian Americans also put their differences aside. Japanese American congressman and aspiring Indian American candidates came together to speak out against racial hatred. People from as far as South Africa or as close as ordinary Hispanic Women voiced their support.

Frank Wu also weighted in on Jimmy Kimmel show from a legal scholar, "I am not concerned for the Chinese. The Chinese can fend for themselves fine." But "someone who is angry at a visceral level about China is not likely to make an exception for me as an Anglophile... from the Midwest." What's more "the subject of harassment on a school playground has no more time to react and considerably less support. It was Kimmel who set up the scenario..." as a result "the professional producers of a hit show should be ashamed to retreat behind the youngster as they have. He has licensed his peers. The cruelty of children toward one another is limitless." Beware, Jimmy Kimmel, ABC and Disney, your behavior and choices are setting up the stage for the hate crimes. Hopefully the protesters can bring all of us the sober reality and nip the hate in the bud.

New generations of Chinese American considered 11.9 the birth of Chinese American Civil Rights Movement. Just like the Vincent Chin in about a generation before, Asian Americans are finally getting out, from the regular bullying that defined them.

It is as shameful though, for Kim Masters and Rich Lowry to come out to defend the "apologies" by Jimmy Kimmel or ABC. Our volunteer speaker from South Africa didn't have the language barrier, the Kids talk segment is a show of "atrocities" and the apologies are clearly "mockeries".  With others we already have our share over there in the comments to help readers making their judgment.

Why we take a position?

When something happened on TV. It can be a show. But we have to speak out when the anchor and network refuses to acknowledge or make a reasonable apology, chose to hide behind "the six year old said that and we didn't agree or script", refuse to come clear and take measures to prevent it from recurring.

Then we hear that kids would learn to say that in school and adults would say "killing all you Chinese" in parks. We need the remedy.

For people really wants to know how kids can say that, we have some thoughts too.

There were people objecting comparing hate speech in Jimmy Kimmel show to Nazi propaganda against Jews in 1933 generally doesn't know that 20-30 million Chinese died during WWII. That's the most of all countries and 6-7 times of all Jews died in the holocaust. The international community didn't even condemn the Nanking Massacre in 1939 when 300,000 Chinese were killed, mostly civilians. In the massacre alone also 20,000 women were raped, including the infants and elderly. In fact, even with WWII alliance, restriction on Chinese immigrants didn't ease much till the law in 1965. Propaganda against China and Chinese has been perennial. As a result these facts were not taught in World History in the United States even in high schools.

Generations of Chinese Immigrants were segregated and excluded in USA since they came till as recent as 1965 just because they work hard, live frugally, didn't demand top dollar and didn't tell others about their side of stories because of their traditional culture. This Eastern culture is still in Japan and China these days, sometimes baffling for outspoken Americans. But it is changing. The cultures will be come together in the world of melting pot. Hope that China will join the international society sooner.

Lastly a reminder from Albert Einstein, who considered himself beyond the borders of country, "The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing". Chinese Americans are getting there soon.

Myth about U.S. National Debt and China (Summary)

Myth: China bought and held on too much U.S. Debt

Former Sen. Alan Simpson, co-chairman of the president's deficit-reduction committee's numbers "There's a group out there that doesn't give a damn about Republicans or Democrats or the president, and it's the people we owe $16 trillion to. Half of that is owned by private people -- people in New York or Cody, Wyoming. The other half is owned by feds, and half of that is owned by China." To cut the chase short, his numbers are “Private US Citizen --50%, Federal Reserve Bank 25%, China --25%".

Fact:

As the largest trade partners of United States, China held a healthy but modest portion of U.S. National Debt to finance the international trade. Even at the peak in 2011, China held only 8.3% of US debt. In 2012 Japan again became the largest foreign U.S. Debt holder. It is normal and not an issue even to talk about for people who cannot distinguish fiscal deficit (big problem) and trade deficit (largely normal in international finance).

It is even more informative if we look at foreign entities' holdings relative to their size of GDP (the zeros should be N/A)

Mainland China’s holding of U.S. Debt is modest to its GDP, given the fact China and U.S. had the biggest trading partnership. It is comparable to Brazil.

Per capita, Chinese’s ownership (mainland) of U.S. Debt is at rock bottom, even below Russia. It is 27% (almost 1/3) below Brazil and way lower than anyone else.

So if shaking down or killing is a solution, going after the banking centers or anywhere else is much more effective than worry about hunting down the Chinese in a vast country.

Myth: China’s holding of U.S. Debt can be a national security threat

Building up from their imaginary numbers, former congressman and another 2012 President wannabe  Allen West declare "China owns about 29 percent of (the U.S.) debt.'' and "our Navy must be supported, not forgotten about". 2012 President aspirant Michele Bachmann claimed "Hu's your daddy" with US national debt.Congressman Sam Johnson "We must not let any other countries hold our national and economic interests hostage." Herman Cain, another Republican presidential candidate in 2012, "If we don't begin to grow with the potential that we have in this country, we will have another national security crisis, and that national security crisis is that China will be as big as we are," Cain said. "They'll start to develop a military as big and as good as ours, and they've got a billion more people and they're holding 26 percent of our debt. And you think we're going to be able to sing Kumbaya with them?"

Lastly pastor Mike Hoggard of Bethel Church in Festus, Missouri, made the sensation speech that China own so much U.S. Debt that it will force U.S. to repay, ending up U.S. will be so miserable that “"And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, …. " Deuteronomy 28:53

Fact:

Firstly China’s U.S. debt ownership is modest and healthy. In GDP and per capita term it is much lower than comparable countries.

Secondly as long as a country is willing to keep on printing its own paper money there’s no danger of real default. Surely the paper will worth less if more outstanding paper money were used to convert to goods. That will hurt the purchasing power of anyone holding the currency.

Thirdly unlike Mortgage, national debt in its own domestic currency is just a promise with no collateral to be foreclosed on.  Even if U.S. chose to default, no country can force U.S. to pay a penny. All they can do is try to go through their, US or international legal systems to negotiate their rights. They surely have the choice of not purchasing any U.S. debt in the future, thus put a stop on the trading and financing. It can be devastating for everyone but debt holders are at disadvantage since they've already gave goods or service of valuable to U.S. in exchange to the IOU which may not worth anything. Even countries defaulted national debt denominated in foreign currencies (which can be a bigger problem since that cannot be printed away) still survived without anyone sending an army of debt collectors. Readers are encouraged to research further into that topic.

Lastly, U.S.’s military is still and will be in foreseeable future the strongest. The alliance it has ensures U.S. will have upper hand in any military conflicts. There’s no evidence suggesting China will be on the trajectory of aggression or prevail in a war. China has its own issue with economy, aging and pollution.

Dumping U.S. Debt will do much bigger harm to China economy without hurting U.S. much, as a result, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called China’s ownership of U.S. debt non-problematic and non-threatening. In fact, China’s purchase and holding of U.S. debt allowed Federal Reserve to pump money into economy to avert even worse recessions.

Myth: China manipulated of Currency and Caused U.S.’s Debt Problem

Fact:

We already see that China’s holding of U.S. National Debt is modest. The realities are that China didn't set out to destroy U.S. industries. The two countries built upon their own strength and specialized in difference industries and roles in world finance. Like two companies, they cooperate and compete. Due to fast rise of labor cost and protectionism, a lot of shoes, clothes and other manufacturers are also closing in China. They are replaced by manufacturers in other countries.

Not everyone agrees on the benefit of free trade, but there’s no evidence that China engaged in or has the capability of accomplishing outrageous currency manipulation to the detriment of U.S. The debt number simply told us that.

The root cause of U.S. Debt problem is the fiscal deficit. The biggest contributors are:

• Social Security
• Medicare
• Other Domestic Entitlement
• Military and Intelligence Spending
• Holes in tax system

When Social Security System was established in 1935 to combat the worst economic crisis, the average life expectancy was 61 years old in United States. With benefit fully starts at age of 65, a large portion of the population contributed but died before claiming benefit. This allowed the rest to enjoy the pie. In 2011 the average life expectancy was 78.7 years in United States. A lot of people get into Social Security pool and stay on it much longer (on average 18 years longer for a hundred million people). As a result the old Social Security promise will collapse under the weight.

The aged and more population also need much more in Medicare and other domestic entitlement programs, making them unattainable. In addition, these are costing much more than before.

U.S. Department of Defense is the world’s biggest employer. This doesn't even account for other intelligence agencies or more expensive private contractors like Mr. Snowden. The wars and drone operations, intelligence operations and high tech weapon programs are also costly.

U.S. tax code allowed a lot of large corporations to pay little or zero tax. Non-for-profit and small business owner also pay little tax. A lot of person at the bottom cannot afford to pay any tax. They get support from tax dollar instead. The top also doesn't pay as much tax as mid-class relative to their real income or asset. Capital gain tax, dividend tax and Estate tax ere cut in the irrational years of dot.com bubble. No one wants to pay tax, but any government and public projects need money.

U.S. and world economy are facing these challenges. Stop using xenophobia and racial hatred to deflect these issues like Nazis resorted to justify WWII. Yes, a world war can provide the political cover to kill and deny the rights to live for everyone demand it.
